31 diciembre The BattleWe had black chocolate in the office yesterday to celebrate the deepening of the Dark Ages.
More rumors about the Beijing News: it appears that the decision to "discipline" the paper came from higher than most of us thought. Rumors have it that it was during a meeting of the P-buro about the media, when mandarins representing multiple government agencies joined in an sudden, vicous chorus against the paper. The Ministry of Public Security seems to be among the most fierce attackers, who complained that the paper had "hyped" multiple cases of prison inmates who had been wrongfully convicted, a few executed, in past years. The Beijing municiple government was another vocal protestor.
Also, the protesting journalists at the Beijing News may be changing their tactic. There seems to have been some concesus among senior editors that they are not completely losing the battle on their homefront; that there is still hope to control the damage and it is not necessay at the moment to for all to jump ship. At least one deputy chief editor, who previously rumors say was also going to be sacked, may be able to stay on. It is still too early to say what is going to happen, as both sides reevaluate the situation and possibly hold some form of negotiation. The journalst walk-out certainly helped.
Rick Carew of Dow Jones Newswire wrote interesting pieces on the China Pol mailing list, and the following graph I find particularly insightful:
"...the amount of solidarity within the Chinese media corps (and the aware foreign media) for The Beijing News' reporting and reporters seems quite strong. An encouraging sign at the grassroots level. There's been no sense of "they got what they deserved" among them from my impression."
That couldn't be truer. Journalists have been showing their solidarity at places like the Reporters' Home BBS, although many of the sharp-worded condemnations get deleted almost right away. Understandably, there's a keen sense of frustration and indignation among many, and some fear that this may be just the latest incident in a continuing trend of iron-fisted crackdowns. that next would be the remaining few relatively daring and outspoken press outlets.
